Mr Marketology Up Close With SEOQuake and SEMRush
Search Engine Result Pages (SERP's) are the lifeblood of internet marketing. The goal of seo is always to increase a website's SERP result- to move that website on to the first pages of results for a specific keyword or keyword phrase search.
There are many tools available to assist with tracking keyword statistics and Google SERP results. Seoquake is a plugin for Mozilla Firefox that I have found useful for this purpose. I recently had the opportunity to interview the SEO QuakeTeam to learn more about their products and developments in the field of SERP.
I began by asking the team how long Seoquake has been around and when SEMRush came into development. Product manager Gleb Suvorov was glad to be able to give a little background:
Gleb stated: "Seoquake has been working for three years already, and SEMRush celebrated its first year on the market in November. Actually, SEMRush is a 2.0 version of our previous tool, namely SEODigger. Instead of SEODigger, we now use SEMRush to analyze not only Google organic results, but also AdWords ads, AdWords keywords. We now gather more statistics such as traffic prices for different web-sites and we have more opportunities to analyze the given data."
I have always believed that the foundation of any good SEO campaign depends on the keywords used. I asked Gleb if he agreed, and how his solution addresses the issue of selecting an optimal set of keywords.
Gleb stated: "Sure, I agree that good keywords is almost a guarantee of success. So, you can rack your brain searching for the good keywords, or you can learn from those who have already succeeded in these researches. This way, the best way to search for keywords by means of SEORush is simply to spy on the best performing competitors (yep, that's cheating a bit, but it works). "
So, how important do you think it is to be aware of your competitors' keywords and how they relate to the words you select to use?
Gleb stated: "Yes, this is really important to understand your competitors' strategies. Using SEMRush you can easily copy their AdWords campaigns at the very beginning (good for new projects), follow by determining keywords that other websites don't have high enough organic ranks for-to beat them there."
That raises another question then; do you feel it is better to go on search volume alone or is there a method to selecting proper keywords?
Gleb stated: "Hmmm. Of course usually high-volume keywords are better than low-volume, but more traffic doesn't mean more conversions or more money. You should monitor your keywords performance not in terms of money but in terms of profit. You should know which exact keyword gives you a customer. Then, you may calculate how much does it cost to be on top for this keyword and how much money the customer spends on your site. We recommend using Google Analytics for this."
I had the chance to ask Gleb what he thinks of about long-tail terms. He responded by saying,
Gleb stated: "long-tail terms can help boost your site performance if you can find a way to "fluff it up". SEMRush has a way to find long tails. You have to sort the keywords by positions and search for those lower than the 10th to 15th position and then do some SEO campaigns targeted exactly for those keywords-going from page 2 to page 1 in SERP results can result in a ten times increase of visitor traffic to your site-and this might be easy to accomplish with a long-tail term."
So in bucketing your keywords, what is a safe practice to not stuff keywords or dilute the weight of a keyword on a page? How does your solution help to define the optimal keywords and how many to put on a page?
Gleb stated: "Well, you may use SEOQuake to determine keyword density on a page. Also we'd prefer to use the old rule: 1 page - 1 keyword."
In my reading and research I noticed that you focus on certain SEM factors. Is your solution focused on SEO, SEM or both; and, how do they interchange with each other?
Gleb stated: "The times of pure SEO are already sinking into oblivion. Sometimes it's more profitable to buy AdWords. So we moved to that area of analysis. That was not so difficult, because it is only a few pixels to the right from organic results. Of course reports for organic rankings are still the most popular, but AdWords keywords reports became more popular a year or two ago."
So does that mean you can you do competitive research with SEMRush?
Gleb stated: "Of course, this is the main idea of our service. You may find your competitors and analyze their organic and AdWords keywords, their ads texts, landing pages etc."
I noticed that SEMRush is part of a suite of solutions. What do the other solutions like SEOPivot do?
Gleb stated: "Well, we have a well-known seo-extension for FireFox and Google Chrome- SEOQuake (seoquake.com). We also have a small research project for MFA-sites called adsspy.com. There were other services- like seopivot or keywordsift or serparchive - but these solutions are closed now. Instead, we have concentrated on the improvement of our core products - SEMRush and SeoQuake."
I'm grateful for your time and your insights; and, I have just one more question I think people would be interested in. Are there any new developments in the works for SEOQuake or SEMRush?
Gleb stated: "Well, we have just released the ES and UK databases for SEMRush and translated the interface into French. Now we are thinking of other regions to make the database for, and creating a couple of new projects simultaneously... all in all, no time to feel bored."
